Medicine and Cosmetics
Pharmaceutical preparation bases, humectants, lubricants (such as ointments, lotions);
The concentration in the injection should be ≤30% (V/V) to prevent hemolysis.
Industrial uses:
Rubber/Plastic: Plasticizers, dispersants, antistatic agents;
Textile/Chemical fiber: Softener, wetting agent, dye carrier;
Metalworking: cutting fluids, polishing agents, welding agents;
Food industry: Approved by the FDA as a food additive (limited to food grade).
Others:
Pesticide emulsifiers, papermaking lubricants, ceramic adhesives.
Reactivity
It has the properties of an alcohol and can be esterified with fatty acids.
Antioxidants (such as 0.25% to 0.5% phenothiazine) need to be added to prevent oxidation.
Toxicity:
Low toxicity: LD₅₀=33750 mg/kg (oral in rats), GRAS certified (FDA);
Local irritation: Mucosal contact may cause pain, and high-concentration injections can lead to hemolysis (>40% V/V).
Safe operation
Avoid contact with skin and eyes (Safety term S24/25);
Store in a cool and dry place, and keep sealed to prevent moisture.
