p-Toluenesulfonic Acid (Molecular Formula: P-Ch3c6h4so3h, Also Written as Tsoh, English P-Toluene Sulfonic Acid) Referred to as Pts, Is a Non-oxidizing Organic Strong Acid, White Needle-Shaped or Powdery Crystals, Soluble in Water, Alcohol, Ether and Other Polar Solvents. It Is Very Easy to Deliquesce, Easily Dehydrate Wood and Cotton Fabrics and Carbonize, And Is Difficult to Dissolve in Benzene and Toluene; It Generates P-Cresol When Alkali Fused.
p-Toluenesulfonic Acid Is Widely Used in the Synthesis of Medicines, Pesticides, Stabilizers for Polymerization Reactions, Catalysts for Organic Synthesis (Esters, Etc.), Intermediates for Coatings, And Resin Curing Agents. It Is a Commonly Used Acid Catalyst in Organic Synthesis. It Can Be Neutralized with Sodium Hydroxide to Produce Sodium P-Toluenesulfonate, And Then Reacted with Phosphorus Pentachloride to Produce P-Toluenesulfonyl Chloride. The Latter Is Used in Nucleophilic Substitution Reactions and Is Also Used as a Protecting Group for Alcohol Hydroxyl Groups. P-Toluenesulfonic Acid Is Also Used to Catalyze the Dihydrofuran Protecting Group on Alcohols, Carboxylic Acid Esterification, Transesterification Reactions, And the Formation of Acetals from Aldehydes.
In Industry, P-Toluenesulfonic Acid Is Produced by Sulfonating Toluene with Concentrated Sulfuric Acid. The Produced P-Toluenesulfonic Acid Often Contains Benzenesulfonic Acid and Sulfuric Acid as Impurities, Which Can Be Purified by Recrystallizing the Impure Sample in Concentrated Hydrochloric Acid and Then Drying It Azeotropically.
P-Toluenesulfonic Acid Is Obtained by Hydrolysis of P-Toluenesulfonyl Chloride. It Can Also Be Obtained by Sulfonation of Toluene with Sulfuric Acid.
