Urea-formaldehyde resin CAS 9011-05-6 is the main material (matrix resin), which is a colorless, odorless, non-toxic, transparent thermosetting resin. It is soluble in water before setting and easy to solidify (a catalyst must be added to promote its solidification). It is the main adhesive in the wood industry at home and abroad.
Urea-formaldehyde resin has become one of the most widely used synthetic resins due to its advantages such as easy availability of raw materials, low cost, fast curing speed, high bonding strength (especially for wood), colorless, and easy modification. Its main uses are concentrated in the following aspects:
1. Wood processing adhesive (accounting for the vast majority of the amount - about 90%):
Manufacturing of artificial boards: This is the largest application area of urea-formaldehyde resin.
Particleboard: Used to bond wood chips, shavings and other debris, and is the main adhesive for producing particleboard.
Medium-density fiberboard: Used to bond wood fibers.
Plywood: Used to bond veneer layers. Usually used for inner boards or plywood for indoor use.
Blockboard: Used to bond core strips.
Oriented strand board: Bond oriented paved shavings.

2. Molding materials:
Urea-formaldehyde resin is mixed with fillers (such as wood powder, pulp), curing agents, pigments, lubricants, etc. to make molding powder.
Use: Various electrical parts (such as switches, socket panels, plugs), daily necessities (such as buttons, bottle caps, cutlery handles), toys, etc. are manufactured by hot pressing. The product has the characteristics of high surface hardness, scratch resistance, bright colors, good electrical insulation and low cost. It is often called "electric jade powder".
3. Textile treatment agent:
Anti-wrinkle and anti-shrinkage finishing: It is used for cellulose fiber fabrics such as cotton and viscose to improve their wrinkle resistance and dimensional stability (cross-linked with cellulose molecules). However, there is a problem of formaldehyde release, and it is gradually replaced or improved by other resins.
Durable pressing finishing: It gives the fabric a good morphological memory function.
Coating: It is used as a fabric backing coating to increase stiffness.
4. Paper treatment agent:
It is used to impregnate paper (such as decorative paper and map paper) to improve its wet strength, dimensional stability, oil resistance and stiffness.
Used as a wet strength agent for paper (but not as effective as melamine formaldehyde resin).
Used as a binder for sandpaper production.
