What is Salicylaldehyde CAS 90-02-8?

Salicylaldehyde, as a multifunctional organic intermediate, is indispensable in the fields of fragrances, medicine, analytical chemistry and industrial sterilization, but its toxicity and flammability need to be strictly controlled. When applying, safety norms must be followed. Especially in the addition of food and cosmetics, international standards (such as GB 2760, FEMA) must be met.

Salicylaldehyde CAS 90-02-8 Use

Main application fields

Spice synthesis: Used for formulating cinnamon and nut-based essences (FEMA 3004), and added to food and cosmetics (subject to safety limits);

Organic intermediates: synthetic coumarin, pharmaceuticals (such as the antiarrhythmic drug benzbromarone), pesticides (herbicides/insecticides);

Analytical reagents: For the detection of metal ions such as nickel, copper and scandium, as well as hydrazine compounds;

Industrial biocide: Circulating cooling water treatment (50-100 mg/L to kill iron bacteria and sulfate-reducing bacteria);

New materials: Synthetic biodegradable polyurethane, high-molecular surfactants.

Salicylaldehyde CAS 90-02-8 safety

Health hazard:

Irritation to the respiratory tract (cough, chest pain), eyes (corneal damage) and skin (moderate irritation);

Acute toxicity: Oral LD₅₀ in rats = 520 mg/kg; The transcutaneous LD₅₀ of rabbits was 3000 mg/kg.

Danger:

Flammable. It may cause combustion when exposed to open flames or oxidants, generating toxic gases (CO, CO₂).

Environmental toxicity: Toxic to aquatic organisms (WGK Germany Level 2).

Protective measures:

Wear protective clothing, goggles and chemical-resistant gloves when operating.

Leakage treatment: Adsorb with sand or rinse with water. In case of large-scale leakage, build embankments to contain the leakage.
