Basic chemical properties
Chemical formula: C₃H₇NO
Molecular weight: 73.09 g/mol
Appearance: Colorless and transparent liquid. Pure products have a faint ammonia smell, while industrial grades with impurities have a fishy smell.
Physical properties:
Melting point: -61℃
Boiling point: 153℃
Density: 0.948 g/cm³ (20℃)
Solubility: It is miscible with most solvents such as water, alcohols, ethers, and ketones, but not with saturated hydrocarbons (such as gasoline).
Chemical properties:
High boiling point, non-protonic polar solvent, promoting SN₂ reaction and enhancing ionic reaction activity;
It is prone to hydrolysis when exposed to strong acids or strong bases, generating dimethylamine and formic acid.
It decomposes into carbon monoxide and dimethylamine at high temperatures (>350℃).

(1)Industrial solvents
Polymer materials: Dissolved polyurethane, polyacrylonitrile, polyvinyl chloride, etc., used in synthetic fibers (dry spinning of acrylic), plastic films and coatings.
Electronics industry: Circuit board cleaning, quenching of tin-plated components.
Gas separation: Recovery of butadiene and isoprene from the C4 / C5 fraction.
(2) Chemical raw materials
Pharmaceutical synthesis: Production of vitamins, hormones, sulfonamide drugs and antibiotics (such as doxycycline).
Pesticides and dyes: Synthetic insecticides (such as amidine), dye solvents.
Separation and purification: Selectively dissolve isophthalic acid (which has a higher solubility than terephthalic acid) and is used in the separation process.
(3) Other fields
Paint remover: Efficiently removes paint coatings;
Pigment treatment: Enhance the dispersibility of low-solubility pigments and simulate the characteristics of dyes.
Health risk
Acute toxicity:
Irritate the eyes, respiratory tract and skin (rinse with clean water for 15 minutes after contact);
Liver injury (jaundice and pain in the liver area occurred several days later), and the oral LD₅₀ in rats was 400-2800 mg/kg.
Chronic effects: neurasthenia, abnormal liver function, low blood pressure.
Carcinogenicity: Classified as a Group 2A carcinogen (possibly carcinogenic to humans).
Environmental risk
Highly toxic to aquatic organisms (96h-LC₅₀=1430 mg/L for blackhead grouper);
The degradation half-life in the air is approximately 22 hours (hydroxyl radical action).
Operation and Emergency Response
Protective measures:
Wear gas masks, chemical protective suits and rubber gloves;
The workplace should be well-ventilated to avoid contact with fire sources (flash point 58℃, flammable).
Leakage handling
Minor leakage: Adsorb with sand and rinse with a large amount of water;
Large-scale leakage: Build embankments, cover with foam and then recycle.
