Melamine Uses and Synthesis Methods

Introduction

Melamine, commonly known as "melamine", "protein essence" and "melamine (Chinese Pinyin: mìàn)", is a triazine nitrogen-containing heterocyclic organic compound that is often used as a chemical raw material. It is a white monoclinic crystal, almost odorless, slightly soluble in water (3.1g/L at room temperature), soluble in formaldehyde, acetic acid, hot ethylene glycol, glycerol, pyridine, etc., insoluble in acetone, ethers, and harmful to the body. Not for use in food processing or food additives. However, some unscrupulous businesses mix melamine into dairy products to increase nitrogen levels when testing protein content.

Application Prospects

Melamine is an important nitrogen-heterocyclic organic chemical intermediate using urea as raw material. It is becoming more and more popular due to its environmental protection properties and wide range of uses. It is widely used in wood processing, plastics, coatings, water reduction, etc. Agents, papermaking, adhesives, textiles, leather, electrical appliances, medicine, flame retardants and other industries. After decades of development, our country has developed its own unique semi-dry technology. At the same time, it has also digested and absorbed advanced foreign process technology and equipment, further enhancing the overall strength of the domestic melamine industry. At present, my country has become the world;s largest melamine production base and export country.

Preparation

The melamine production unit adopts a pressurized gas phase quenching method. The liquid urine in the urea unit area is used as raw material to generate melamine and by-product tail gas (ammonia, carbon dioxide) through a catalytic reaction. The excess ammonia and carbon dioxide are sent to the urea co-production unit to co-produce urea. The produced urea continues to be sent to the melamine device to realize recycling production of raw materials. In the final stage of melamine crystallization, after the process gas coming out of the crystallizer is separated by the finished product cyclone separator, all the process gas at 210°C enters the top of the urine washing tower, contacts the urine sprayed down, and is cooled by the urine. After heat exchange, the temperature reaches 133~138°C, and then enters the gas collection box through five columnar cyclone separators. The gas-liquid separation is performed to remove the entrained melamine and low-temperature by-products. The gas is separated by the carrier gas cyclone separator and then enters the carrier gas. One part of the compressor is used as circulating carrier gas, and the other part of the gas enters the air-conditioning fan and is sent to the crystallizer. The excess melamine tail gas is sent to the urea absorption system for recycling through the tail gas compressor.

Use

Melamine resin can be obtained by condensation polymerization with formaldehyde, which can be used in the plastics and coating industries, and can also be used as an anti-folding and anti-shrink treatment agent for textile fabrics. Its modified resin can be used to make metal coatings with bright colors, durability and good hardness. It can also be used in strong, heat-resistant decorative sheets, moisture-proof paper and gray leather tanning agents, adhesives for synthetic fireproof laminates, fixatives or hardeners for waterproofing agents, etc. 582 melamine resin is made from melamine, formaldehyde and butanol. Used as a leveling agent for solvent-based polyurethane coatings, the effect is particularly good.

Industrial additives are widely used in plastics, coatings, textiles, and papermaking. Recent testing items: Milk powder and feed companies add melamine to increase protein content. As long as some chemicals with high nitrogen content are added, the protein content may appear to be up to standard during testing. Therefore, Melamine is also known as "protein protein quot;. Ingesting a large amount can damage the reproductive and urinary systems of humans and animals, produce kidney and bladder stones, and lead to death from renal failure.
