Cosmetics and personal care
Whitening and removing spots
Inhibit tyrosinase activity (inhibition rate 50% at 100 μmol/L) and block melanin production.
Common concentration: 0.5% - 2% (for face cream and essence). Caution is needed for high concentrations.
Antioxidant: Scavenging free radicals (scavenging rate at 1mg/mL: 30.2% superoxide free radicals, 36.4% singlet oxygen).
Anti-inflammatory and soothing: Inhibits hyaluronidase (0.1% inhibition rate 86.9%).
2. Food industry
Anti-corrosion and preservation
It has stronger antibacterial properties than sodium benzoate and a wide pH range of application.
It is used for the preservation of fruits and vegetables (soaking in 0.1% solution to prevent Browning) and the color protection of meat.
Antioxidants: Prevent oil rancidity and work in synergy with vitamin C.
3. Medicine and Agriculture
Medicine: Antifungal, anti-inflammatory and analgesic, with potential anti-cancer effects (further research is needed).
Agriculture
Biological pesticides (inhibiting phenol oxidase in insects).
Plant growth promoters (increase production by 10% - 15%).
Toxicity controversy
WHO Group 3 carcinogens (possibly carcinogenic to humans), but animal experiments have not confirmed their tumorigenicity.
Thyroid effect: High-dose oral administration may inhibit iodine absorption (rodent experiment).
Regulation of various countries
China: Included in the "Catalogue of Used Cosmetic Ingredients" (2021 Edition), with no limit regulations, it is recommended to be ≤1%.
Japan: It was banned in 2003 and lifted in 2005, with a usage limit of 0.1% to 1%.
Eu/US: It is considered safe to add ≤1% to resident products.
Usage Warning:
High concentrations (> 2%) may cause sensitization and contact dermatitis.
Avoid inhaling dust during operation. If it gets into the eyes, rinse immediately.
