Uses and Synthesis of Hexamethyldisiloxane

Introduction

Hexamethyldisiloxane (Silicone Ether, Mm Capping Agent), Colorless Transparent Liquid, Easy to Deliquesce. Insoluble in Water, Soluble in a Variety of Organic Solvents. Used as Silicone Oil, Silicone Rubber, Medicine, Gas Chromatography Stationary Liquid, Analytical Reagent, Water Repellent, Etc. It Is Made by Hydrolysis of Trimethylchlorosilane.

Physical Properties

Hexamethyldisiloxane Is a Colorless Transparent Liquid. It Is Hygroscopic and Flammable. It Is Dangerous to Burn When Exposed to High Heat, Open Flame, Or Strong Oxidants. Boiling Point: 99.5℃. Flash Point: -1.1℃. Relative Density (D2525): 0.7606. Refractive Index: 1.3750. Insoluble in Water, Soluble in Many Organic Solvents.

Application

Hexamethyldisiloxane Is an Important Primary Raw Material for Organosilicon, And Is Often Used as a Capping Agent in the Production of Organosilicon Oil, Or as a Cleaning Agent for Silicone Rubber, Pharmaceuticals, Gas Chromatography Stationary Fluids, Analytical Reagents, Hydrophobic Agents, And Medical Electronic Components. The Si-O-Si Bond in the Molecular Chain Structure of Hexamethyldisiloxane Has a High Chemical Bond Energy (460.5 Kj/Mol), And the Polysiloxane Prepared by Using It as a Capping Agent Has Good Thermal and Chemical Stability.

Production Method

62.49g (0.575mol) Trimethylsilyl Chloride Was Added Dropwise to a Solution Consisting of 72.7g (0.06mol) N,N-Dimethylaniline and 7g Water, And Heated Under Reflux for 1h. The Fractions at 98-101℃ Were Collected by Atmospheric Distillation, And Dried to Obtain Hexamethyldisiloxane, With a Yield of 43-44g and a Yield of 92-94%. The Industrial Production Is to Hydrolyze Trimethylsilyl Chloride at 30-40℃.
